Earlier this year we decided to offer a Scholarship for undergraduate students enrolled full-time at a Virginia college or university.
We felt the scholarship would be an opportunity to encourage discussion about issues that are important to our firm and our community at large, while also giving us a chance to give back.
Scholarship applicants were required to write an essay of up to 1,000 words on the following prompt related to criminal justice:
"First time drug offenders should be sentenced to treatment programs and community service instead of jail." - Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?
Essays had to be submitted by June 30th, 2019, and the winner was announced to all participants on July 31, 2019.
The Scholarship Winner
Congratulations go to Cindy Ly, the first ever Tingen Law Undergraduate Scholarship winner.
Ms. Lee is an undergraduate student at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA.
Her essay was chosen after a rigorous review process where we evaluated each applicant's resume, and considered the arguments of each essay and their relative strengths and weaknesses.
Ms. Lee's essay stood out for its concise arguments in favor of wise criminal justice reform.
Ms. Lee was notified on July 25, 2019, and has already received her scholarship check of $600, along with a free #Lawyerup T-shirt from our office.
Annual Scholarship Opportunity
2019 marked the first year Tingen Law has chosen to offer a scholarship, in what we hope will be an annual tradition of giving to students who provide cogent arguments on topics related to law and current events.
We look forward to giving back to our community through scholarship opportunities like these for years to come.
In the meantime, you can read Ms. Lee's essay, available here.
