Announcing the Winner of the 2020 Tingen Law Undergraduate Scholarship
Jacob Tingen

To begin, we would like to thank everyone who applied for this year's undergraduate scholarship.

Last year we were pleasantly surprised at the number of applications we received, and this year was no different, as more than 60 young scholars chose to submit applications for this year's award.

These applicants were required to submit information about themselves and to write an essay of around 1,000 words that responded to the following prompt:

“First time drug offenders should be sentenced to treatment programs and community service instead of jail.” – Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?

We graded these applications by scoring each applicant's overall application on a variety of factors (such as the strength of their essay, their academic achievements, and their involvement in the community) and then picked the winner from the three applications that received the highest scores.

The Scholarship Winner: Elijah Michel

Without further ado, we would like to introduce the winner of the 2020 Tingen Law Undergraduate Scholarship: Elijah Michel!

Elijah is a political science major and currently attends the University of Richmond as an Oliver Hill Scholar.

His extracurricular activities include membership in the University of Richmond's multicultural student alliance, black student alliance, and Block Crew, an urban hip hop dance team that focuses on the bridge between music and dance.

Elijah's strong response to the essay prompt and his excellent letters of recommendation placed him ahead of the other applicants, and ultimately led us to chose him for this award.

This year was the second annual Tingen Law Undergraduate Scholarship competition, and we're already looking forward to next year's applications.
